Happy Summer!

Long days and short nights. Summer is the most Yang time of the year. In Chinese Medicine this symbolizes movement, expansion outward and activity. In the winter we withdraw inward and store energy. Summer is the season to use that stored energy for fun activities.

The representative element of summer is Fire and the Heart is the organ. Fire is energy, it expands, constantly moves and grows. This is the time to be active outdoors; exercise, take late afternoon walks, do some gardening or yardwork.

Summer is the only season that you will hear your Acupuncturist say that cold, raw foods are ok. The cooling properties of raw fruits and vegetables help generate fluids that cool the body down during these hot months. Here’s a list of cooling, hydrating foods you can enjoy.

Fruits: watermelon, cantaloupe, peaches, oranges, strawberries, apricots, lemons, tomatoes

Vegetables: Asparagus, Bok Choy, broccoli, Chinese cabbage, corn, cucumber, spinach, summer squash, mint, dill, cilantro

Enjoy the season by eating light, staying hydrated, exercising to move Qi and Blood, and of course get weekly acupuncture.
